Abstract: Retailers tend to have a formula of when to move merchandise off their shelves. As it turns out, if you time things right, you can stock up for the year on many products that are on sale.

There are certain times of the year when specific products tend to be on sale. Keep a list of your own throughout the year to track your local department stores' sale cycles. Here's a list to start you off:

  1. January: Holiday cards (Christmas and Chunakah), decorations, airline tickets, air conditioners, linens
  2. February: carpeting, dishes, garden tools, men's clothing
  3. March: winter coats, ski equipment, laundry appliances, bedding
  4. April: painting supplies, garden supplies, hosiery, women's clothing
  5. May: electronics, small appliances, outdoor furniture, shoes, sportswear
  6. June: men's clothing, air conditioners, building materials, bedding
  7. July: summer clothes, sunglasses, briefcases, handbags
  8. August: school supplies, swimming suits, tires, grills
  9. September: bicycles, summer merchandise, new cars (the current year's model), cleaning supplies
  10. October: men's shoes, furniture, fishing and golf equipment, home improvement supplies
  11. November: major appliances, winter clothing, houses, men's shirts
  12. December: avoid buying anything prior to the holiday season!
