Abstract: Protect yourself and your family by safeguarding your identity with these five steps.

The below safeguards are not intended to be a comprehensive list.  It's hopefully just a starting point to get you thinking of ways to protect you and your family from identity theft.  Please respond with the ideas you have for keeping your personal information safe!

  1. Absolutely get a firewall on your computer - this is a must!
  2. As convenient as it may be, don't mail your bills with checks from your home mailbox where someone else can remove the envelope
  3. Shred everything that is of a personal nature
  4. Leave important documents and credit cards at home
  5. Ask to be removed from mailing and telemarketing lists through the Direct Marketing Association, http://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist and http://www.dmaconsumers.org/stillgettingcalls.shtml. While you're at it, tell your creditors and utility service providers that you do NOT wish to receive direct mail or telephone calls from them either.
