Abstract: Save time and money by reducing the amount of junk mail you receive. To get out of debt you need to stop spending money. Without all the tempting catalogs in your mailbox, you may find it easier to reduce your spending.

It is likely that you are the recipient of an overburdening amount of junk mail - both paper and electronic. These envelopes and messages contain solicitations, and many times can be a tempting way to through you off your debt-reduction track.  To save time and money, it will be important to reduce the amount of junk mail you get.  Remember, how you spend your time is your choice.  Save your time by avoiding junk mail.

First, make it a point to throw away or delete these solicitations as soon as you see them. Don't even open them! Second, request to be removed from these companies' mailing lists. According to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), you may request not to receive direct mail solicitations by mailing a postcard or letter stating your name and complete address to:

Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512

You may also submit your request to the DMA online at
http://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist.  The issue I have with either of these solutions is that the DMA charges you $1 to be removed from the list.  However, I guess its the price you pay for convenience.

If you desire to be opted-out of credit and insurance offers specifically, you can do this at the OptOutPreScreen.com website,
https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t.  These are the direct mail offers you receive via the U.S. postal service where you are "pre-approved" for a credit promotion.  It's not a perfect solution but you can be opted out of these lists in five year increments via the electronic opt-out process.  To do this, be aware that you will be asked to provide your name, address, social security number, and date of birth.  To be permanently opted-out you have to go to the website, print and mail the permanent opt-out election form.

As a caveat, the website also states the following disclaimer:
"While your name will be removed from the lists that Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion provide to businesses for the purpose of making you a firm offer of credit or insurance, you may continue to receive offers from sources that do not use Consumer Credit Reporting Companies to compile their lists."

For general email message solicitations, click on the link in the message that allows you to 'unsubscribe' to any additional messages.

Additionally, next time you speak with your creditors, tell them you want to be on their 'Do Not Mail and Do Not Call list.' This will help eliminate much of the junk cluttering your life, and some unnecessary spending.
