Ways to Save Money

Abstract: If you're in debt, spending money on household products should be watched very carefully. I'm sure you would rather spend your money on an extra payment to a credit card or splurging on a dinner than spending it on soap, shampoo, or household cleaners. Share your ideas of how you save money around the house too!

Lately I have been focused on the design of the containers used to hold all of my liquid products. Have you ever studied the construction of the bottles that hold your dishwasher soap, shampoo, hair gel, moisturizer, sun screen, toothpaste, etc.?   I've realized that the companies selling these products must spend a lot of time and money thinking of the design of the container.

Here are some odd observations I've made:
  • Often the hole in my shampoo bottle is slightly too big so it pours out too fast
  • The tube in the soap pump dispenser only goes half way down the bottle
  • The spray bottle tube in the hair spray and cleaners bottles also don't reach to the bottom of the bottle either
  • The plastic scoop that comes with the laundry detergent, dog food, and cat food is two to three times the recommended amount

Here's some ways save money on your household products:

  1. The pump dispenser used for hand soap can be recycled for your shampoo, conditioner, and body soap.  Pour your shampoo into this pump dispenser and have each family member use one or two pumps only.   This can be a big savings!
  2. Make a concerted effort to turn every bottle upside down for a few minutes when the bottle is becoming empty. You will be as surprised as I was to find that you can get many more uses out of the product!
  3. Recycle the pastic scoop that comes with the product.  Replace it with the appropriate size scooper.  My dog lost 3 pounds just by doing this!  And, I'm not going through my laundry detergent as fast anymore since I use less product.
  4. Invest in a funnel if you don't have one.  When transferring household proucts to a diferent more cost-effective container, don't waste the product by it spilling everywhere.  Unfortunately this comes from my personal experience!

It's as though you're getting everything on sale if you can pump, press, squeeze out five more uses.
