Abstract: “Every morning when you wake up, decide what three things you NEED to do today to make you happy,” declared my long time girlfriend, Judith. She continued, “Your job, your kids, your responsibilities, they all tend to suck you in every day and before you know it the day is gone without you consciously choosing the things that will make you happy.”

Judith had a very good point. My life is so full that I didn’t feel that I was running my own show. The things that that I do for myself since implementing her advice are not going to rock anyone’s world, but even the simplest activities that I choose to do make me feel more empowered which, in turn, make me happy.

Can you learn to make yourself happy?  Yes!  But you need to do the work to define what will make you happy.  Maybe being debt free will finally make you happy, or finishing your college education, or a new job, etc.  Whatever it is, you need to decide WHAT will make you happy.  Otherwise, you will never reach for anything that will get you to a place of happiness.

On a smaller scale, each day, decide what three things you MUST do for yourself that will get you closer and closer to your goal.

No matter how busy I am my dog, Cody, demands his morning walk. This 15 minute walk first thing in the morning has provided me the time I need to schedule my day, each day. And, I think of what small things will I do for myself that day to be happy.

Here are some simple things to help you get started:

- Spend 30 minutes exercising (an hour if I’m lucky)

- Take a bubble bath

- Give myself a facial

- Spend 15 minutes in meditation

- Eat healthy today

- Drink 64 ounces of liquids

- Take my dog on a long walk through the woods

- Call my mother

- Have lunch with a friend

- Take 15 minutes and schedule my doctor, hair, or other appointments

- Give myself a manicure

- Write a letter to my grandparents

- Plan nutritious meals for the next two days

- Daydream of a vacation I want to take

- Go to www.yogatoday.com and take a free yoga class

- Read a book

- Plan my goals

- Send an extra $25 toward your credit card debt

- Make dinner reservations for you and your special someone this weekend

Ask yourself what brings you pleasure. What three things can you do today to feel you are participating in your life?

The guidance from my girlfriend has made a significant difference in how I run each day. And, I have her to thank. I take this simple process and applyy it to my job each day which has really reduced the stress in my life. I ask myself before starting my workday, what three things must happen today to make my clients happy.

Take action. Be happy.
