Abstract: Carpet cleaning has become big business over the last decade. People have figured out that what lies at the bottom of their carpet can make them wheez, sneeze, and cause an allergy attack if you're suspectible to that kind of thing.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if your entire house was hardwood floors because you would know when the floors are dirty.  With wall-to-wall carpeting, however, you can never really be too sure how dirty the carpets have become until you clean them.

If I live in my home for more than ten years, I will make the investment and replace the wall-to-wall carpet with wood floors.  Until then, however, I have to live with a neutral short shag.

If I wasn't a dog owner, I probably wouldn't give as much thought to how clean or dirty my carpets have become.  When my dog was a puppy and wasn't fully house-trained, I didn't hesitate to buy a carpet cleaner of my own.  It was a way to keep my sanity while my dog was able to learn how to only go outside.

After a year of using that carpet cleaner, it died.  I was really surprised to discovery that the life of household carpet cleaning equipment just isn't that sturdy.  If you have small children or young pets, I would say having a carpet cleaner is a necessity.  But, they really aren't cheap and the fun, carpet, and dirt really take a toll on the carpet steam cleaner.

After donating the carpet cleaner to the local Goodwill, I really didn't want to spend so much money on buying another one.  Like most households, I receive Stanley Steamer carpet cleaner coupons along with other professional carpet cleaning companies.  Problem is, you pay $99 for three rooms, and you have six rooms with carpeting.  By the time you finish paying for spot removers and deodorizers, as well as the time you had to take off of work to be at home, cleaning your carpets really got very expensive.

So if owning your own new carpet cleaner won't last a long time, buying a used one is not advisable, and hiring a professional company to come clean your carpets is way out of your budget, the best thing to do is rent.

When I need to clean my carpets, my neighbor and I decide on a day that we are both free and we share the expense of the rental.  The carpet doctor rental machine runs about $20 per day plus tax and don't forget about the expensive carpet cleaning solution, upholstery cleaner, and anti-foamer.  The solutions may run you another $50.  So in total, after you split the cost, the rental will run roughly $35.

Look at your local hardware and grocery stores for specials.  About a week before I rent the machine, I email a carpet cleaner manufacturer such as Rug Doctor and ask them to mail me a coupon for their rental equipment and solutions.  You can rent rug doctor machines in a regular or wide width.  I spend the few extra dollars for the wide width because I can clean the carpets faster that way.

Here are some tips on how to get a professional clean when renting a carpet cleaner:

  1. Be sure to vacuum your carpet well before renting the carpet cleaner.
  2. Test cleaning a small spot of your carpeting and upholstery before doing the entire area to ensure that the carpet and upholstery are color-safe.
  3. Use the recommended cleaning solutions recommended for the machine.  Otherwise you may end up with a real foamy mess on your hands.
  4. Spot treat any tough stains and let it soak before cleaning
  5. Clean your carpets at least twice a year to have them stay looking fresh and clean.
  6. Rent the upholstery cleaner hand tool, you'll be amazed how dirty your chairs and couches are.

If you can't move large pieces of furniture do what you can around the furniture.  Think of all the exercise you'll get cleaning your carpets!

The best part of the process is when you're done.  You know that you cleaned it and you will have spent more time to clean it than any other professional.

You will enjoy how clean your house smells and how bright your carpet looks.
